Video Vault - Thomas and the Royal Visitor (2002)

It’s been a while since we opened up our video vault, but as we enter a very special time this week, we share a UK video that’s just right for this occasion - Thomas and the Royal Visitor.

Episodes Included
 Gordon and the Famous Visitor
Paint Pots and Queens
Thomas and Gordon
Snow
Tender Engines
A Better View for Gordon

Released in 2002, being ten years ago this year, VCI had placed this video together to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, hence the episode Paint Pots and Queens and the Union Jack flags on the front sleeve.

But to a young Thomas fan, this is a compilation of episodes featuring Thomas and his friend Gordon, the Big Blue Engine, this series of Treat Size tapes also included Bertie, Toby and Percy, and featured five or six episodes.

This release, centring around Gordon, includes the time when the Queen came to the island for her very special visit, a proud moment Gordon never forgets, and still is remembered to this day, along with confronting the City of Truro, meeting the Flying Scotsman, opening Kirk Rohan rather by accident and the first time he played the most sinister trick on Thomas, giving him the ride of his life!

The only episode i don't think fits in with this release is Snow, as Gordon only had one minor role towards the end, and rather oddly, the Series 1, 4 and 5 episodes are mistakenly dated as 1991 as only the Series Three should be.

Never the less, a good pick to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Callum's Lookover

In recent months, some of the new Thomas DVD's have been good and poor, particularly the current 4-episode releases, both US and UK versions, only rarely do we get a DVD that contains more stories then four and features classic and new material that we can actually enjoy, the UK has so far received three with Best of James, Percy and the Complete 13th Series, for America, this is the first in two years (except Day of the Diesels).

Engine Friends features a selection of stories through seasons 1 - 11 (minus Seasons 3 + 8) with its tagline being stories of friendship, and as far as i can see, this is a pretty good selection.

In 2010, The Greatest Stories was released in celebration of Thomas's 65th with stories from Series 1 - 11 (minus series 6), but the stories were rather poorly selected, as if they were grabbed from a barrel of other DVD's (eg Thomas' Halloween Adventures or Engines and Escapades) and just crammed together, the bonus features on the other hand were interesting, with several new music videos and a fun interactive story of a first season episode.

This DVD however does the opposite, the stories are good, but the bonus features could of been better, the only one i think fits this release is Sir Topham Hatt's scrapbook, the rest are plain dull, all are narrated by Robin Smith.

With most releases nowadays, restored footage is featured for the stories of the first two seasons, and as an added bonus (as with Diesel's Devious Deeds on the Greatest Stories release) we are treated to two original US Ringo Starr recordings not seen since the Shining Time Station episode "Is this the End?" - having HiT and Lionsgate dig into these old versions now cleaned up is pretty neat, and the US can avoid the UK dialogue as The Greatest Stories pointed out, Hide and Peep and Emily and the Garbage also make their US DVD Debut.

However, once again the bonus features and not the episodes are descripted on the rear cover, this is regular for most US releases nowadays, but I’ll give this one a miss, as most of these are pretty decent stories, all the episodes, including seasons 6 -11 are presented in 4:3 fullscreen, a shame really, as most of us are now into Widescreen telly, but this also affects the CGI releases too (Except Digital Downloads)

One or two nit-picks, the classic episodes are dated 1995 mistakenly, the audio quality for the French versions of Granpuff and Sleeping Beauty sound rather poor, and as most of us have now noticed, Footage from Thomas and the New Engine is used in the first few seconds of Thomas and the Statue, that must have been a technical error, lastly, Ringo sadly does not gain a credit on the rear for being an all-star storyteller, it’s also interesting to know as this features English, French and Spanish audio languages, Emily's New Coaches features its new music from Robert Hartshorne in the English and Spanish languages, whist the French version carries its original Mike O' Donnell and Junior Campbell Soundtrack, and for once, i can skip the Island Intro and Engine Roll Call songs with a simple touch of the skip button on my remote, and not fast forwarding.. :P

Not really any stories i can pick in being the worse, but having stories featuring Duke, Smudger, Donald, Douglas and Duck will be a first for new fans, who can then look them up on the Thomas Website.

In the end, i can concur this could be the only decent release America will receive until Blue Mountain Mystery comes out (which by the way has the Trailer of the film included!) and soon US releases will be back to square one with Playschool Delivery due out July, so i can certainly recommend this one for both British and American fans everywhere - The DVD is also available on Digital Download stores.

Overall:
Thumbs Up! : 4/5

Rescue on the Rails - UK DVD Review

The opinions by the controllers of the blog in these reviews are SOLELY OUR OWN. They do not reflect the opinions of the entire Thomas and Friends fanbase

Episodes Featured
Fiery Flynn
James to the Rescue
Edward the Hero
Stop That Bus!

Bonus Features
Watch with Mr Perkins
Down at the Station: The Level Crossing
Guess Who?

Callum’s Lookover

Its again when I have to ask, why do the worst episodes become the centre of attention for any Thomas and Friends product, this is another example, with Fiery Flynn being the main episode, if it had been James to the Rescue it would have been worse, but what do you expect from the Sharon Miller era?

I have to admit; Stop that Bus is my only fav S15 episode, for several reasons, one of them being Bertie’s full CGI appearance and voice, which reminded me of the Johnny Morris Bertie voice.

The bonus features are regular, Down at the Station looks this time at the importance of level crossings, and we see Mr Perkins get ready for a Magic Show, I’ll admit for that feature it’s nice to see a little more life in the Engine Drivers common room, with all the extras playing the steam engine drivers, but in all honesty, did nearly all of them have to be bold headed? – I can imagine seeing Andy Parsons in that line up.

One let-down of this release is that the episodes are not mentioned on the rear of the sleeve, so no-one can tell what’s on the DVD, or how many episodes are featured unless looking on the net, with Mr Perkins included I’m sure many will think there are the regular four with the DVD going at a one hour running time, but the recent Best of Percy and James releases featured twenty each, and so did the 2010 Best of Thomas, and neither had their episodes descripted either, most of the US releases have also lacked in episode info too, and I can imagine it will continue for future releases, the other, the tagline “Thomas’s Firebox is on Fire!” - Need I say more?

Taking it to another Day out With Thomas weekend afew days before its release (Cheers HMV Online) the audience were ponderous into why it was all CGI, and when later changed to a classic series title, nearly every seat was taken up, maybe it’s time these were put on in the afternoon….
Another to wait until a cheap price I’m afraid, not as terrible as Up, Up and Away but still another episode that clearly didn’t deserve the spotlight….

Chris' Lookover

Like the Up, Up and Away DVD, I have no intention in buying this one, or any CGI DVDs as they're simply far too overpriced, especially now, as prices are being pushed up due to the government shutting VAT loopholes that HMV and Play had exploited.

The DVD is a mixed bag episode-wise.  The first two are just awful.  Fiery Flynn just makes Fireman Sam look a lot better than he already is, the amount of time between the announcement of the emergency and actually tackling it is dangerously long and the "you're not on fire?" lines just fail for me.  Flynn is a FIREFIGHTER, he should know who is and is not on fire.  As for "firebox on fire"?... just don't go there.

James to the Rescue is just repetative, dull and really lacks any sort of common sense.  If Toby knew to fetch Rocky, he should've just gone to fetch him.  He's wise enough to realise that would be the right course of action.  I hated James being discriminatory towards Toby.  So much so that I don't think the crash was enough to punish James.  He never even BOTHERED apologising afterwards...  In a supposedly civilised society things like that should not be said, especially in a show for impressionable children!

The other two were the two good episodes of the series, despite the repitition and rhyming.  Although Edward HAS been a hero many times in the classic series and the Railway Series and I just hate Misty Island.  The only positive about that place is that kids were shown how dangerous some things are, when Bertie came off the well wagon (not a flatbed) at the Shake Shake Bridge.

The Down at the Station segment is really good, and the Mr Perkins segment is quite fun, but that's about it.  There are better ways to spend between £8-£15 (depending on where you shop), but getting this DVD certainly isn't one of them.  There's simply not enough on releases like these, especially on releases like these.  If they're going to release CGI series DVDs, just release the Complete Series ones straight away and just leave these in America.

Nick Jr - Thomas's right Station stop?

This week we look over Thomas's time on Nick Jr but ask the question, over some
recent brodcast issues with the UK Viacom channel, is he now worth watching here?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I rarely had the chance of seeing Thomas on Children's ITV when I was little, it was mostly videos for me, and the occasional news report or TV Advert, but the first time I tuned into Thomas on TV wasn’t until 1999 when we had Sky Digital, and we had Nick Jr, the UK Viacom channel that was the first UK Pre-school channel, Thomas had recently been on Cartoon Network after his ten year time on ITV, which was strange seeing how it wasn't really a cartoon, but I hardly saw most of the broadcasts there until YouTube came along, from what I saw most of the original video versions (minus name boards) were used, but some of the soundtracks from the second series featured an “echo” soundtrack, as you would find on one or two Thomas videos.

(Series 1 + 4 orignal title into)

Series 1 – 5 were all digitally remasterd (not restored) for Nick Jr as they were from 1997, but our heads were scratching into why Series 1and 4 was using the original intro for some of their broadcasts,

The times for Thomas on Nick Jr were first 7:30am and 4:00pm – two good times to both wake up and tune in, and then race home from school to watch him, even if they were repeats, four episodes would usually show for half an hour, then Nick Jr changed a few times over, from 12:30pm at lunchtime to 2:30pm in the afternoon, good times for weekend showings.

Thomas was also shown at a rather late, but good 7:00pm time for Nick Jr’s night-time slot “Noggin” – later renamed Nick Jr Classics, that held some of the best vintage programs, such as Ivor the Engine, Rainbow and Paddington, now no longer broadcasting, Today Nick Jr now has two channels and both show Thomas, but even so, Thomas is on far too early for any younger audience to get up unless they set Sky + to record, but even today with from 3:00pm broadcasts, 6:00am/6:30am in the morning is just too early time for the show, but it’s not only the times that are wrong for Nick Jr...

In 2004 HiT Entertainment released Series Eight out and joined up with both PBS and Nick Jr to present some half hour TV episodes, usually these would either have an interactive segment, song, or a recomposed music story from Series Seven in-between.

By the time Series 9 was broadcasted, HiT took the strange decision to recompose Series Six, the first time Michael Brandon narrated these episodes for Series Six instead of Alec Baldwin, but why did Michael Angelis have to renarrate them to? Like Series Seven was in 2004 couldn’t they have just re-narrated the soundtrack?

During that time Thomas’s 60th anniversary was celebrated and according to TV Choice Magazine, a special celebration day was thrown for Thomas, possibly with back to back episodes, but my family got rid of kids channels so I didn’t see much of what Thomas doing was after that, i didn't even have the internet in our own home by then, it wasn’t until 2011 last year when I got Sky + and gained back the Kids channels to catch up what Thomas was doing and showing and found out a lot had been chopped from recent broadcast years.

Re-narrated stories stopped from Series Ten and there would be either an extended song or one of two segments, Series Eleven introduced the “Fun Times” segments and Series Twelve featured the “Thomas' Favourite Friends” segments.

During his time on Nick Jr, Series Six was presented first before HiT (who had taken over from Gullane) put Thomas back on the tracks of CiTV after his ten year absence, with Series Six and Seven shown either from the 3:15pm/3:30pm time, but by the time Series Eight broadcasted not all 26 episodes were broadcasted, and eventually even with CiTV moving over to its own channel with its own lunchtime preschool slot, Thomas was dropped in 2006

After a while Thomas came to Channel 5’s Milkshake, Series Nine came first, then Series Eight, (despite it wasn’t brand new when Milkshake said it was) and by that time, Nick jr went very quiet, S4C in Wales was also repeating episodes from Series Six and Seven and were unaware at that time the series continued until they finally gave Welsh broadcastings of Series Thirteen and Fourteen in 2011.

In 2010, aswell as Milkshake, Nick Jr finally started showing the new CGI episodes from Series Thirteen, they included two episodes and one song in-between (as well as the Roll Call song) but that was it, on PBS they had longer programs that included interactive puzzle segments as well as the Down at the Station segments, but Nick Jr kept it slim, their broadcasts were at least 20 mins leading seven minutes before the next program, Nick Jr could of included just one segment that would of made it longer.

The aspect ratio was disappointing as well, in the times of HD and Widescreen TV, Some of the broadcasts were in 14:9 instead of 16:9 Widescreen and the quality of the episodes didn’t look as good as the Milkshake/PBS broadcasts, PBS Sprout (who also currently show the classic series) have yet to catch up for Widescreen as well, hence a rather poor early showing of Day of the Diesels in 2011.

Series Fourteen was broadcasted on Milkshake in the fall of 2010, but it didn’t reach Nick Jr until the summer of 2011 and it didn’t improve, some of the new songs were not included as they were featured in the US Broadcasts.

But during transmission on one of the episodes from that season “Charlie and Eddie” Nick Jr viewers couldn’t help but notice something was wrong just two mins into the episode, and you can see it here…

If Nick Jr and HiT have not noticed this by now they should of fixed it, but also, the Series Nine programs are now also edited, cutting the segments and songs out and just leaving the episodes, the re-recorded version of Something Fishy was completely out of sync three mins from the start of it.

And just recently, most of the episodes from the Series Ten broadcast slots have also been messed up with Segment cuts, leading either to crossover or out of sync episode narrations.

My last point out concerns episodes missing, now removed from the Classic Series broadcasts are most of the Christmas Episodes, but strange enough, so is A Scarf for Percy, and Series 8/11, the Christmas Eps were not shown around Christmas time the last few years, and knowing some recent stories in the papers, it’s not surprising, Milkshake on the other hand leave some Christmas Episodes at times to broadcast in December itself.

With series Fifteen and Sixteen awaiting broadcast it certainly may not be worth the wait for Nick Jr’s viewers, Milkshake already having done them provide them in much better quality aswell as on Demand, Nick Jr have a lot to clean up if viewers want to be tuning into Thomas more.

Across the pond, the children's television channel JimJam does a fair better job presenting Thomas for their younger audiance seeing how its a channel owned and presented by HiT, at good current morning, afternoon and evening slots, two classic series episodes or one full new series episode is pretty much good to fill up one full hour of other programs broadcasting.
http://www.asia.jimjam.tv/timings/timings.html

But the unfortunate thing is that JimJam is not presented in the UK, and i think it would be good for HiT to put this channel here to drive up some competition with Nick Jr, with more chances of seeing classic Thomas at more better times.

In the end, i personally think despite it does take no use of the classic series, Milkshake is doing the job fine, bringing Thomas at a good time to wake up, with new episodes first, and at times with special appearances by The Fat Controller, and provides better quality viewing than Nick Jr.

No matter how hard they try, even with the Classic Series on their schedules and with new episodes coming in late, Nick Jr needs to rethink in how they are presenting this particular children’s program.

Now we ask you, what current series is showing in your area weather it be PBS or ABC, and is classic material starting to lack where you are? - Post your comments below.

Thomas & Friends - CGI DVDs - Are they really worth it?

In the world of digital technology, Thomas and Friends continues to expand in Home Entertainment, DVD, Blu-Ray, On Demand, Digital Download, the list goes on, but what in terms of quality does it have to offer for its audiences in what title they purchase…

DVD – UK vs US
Today’s Thomas and Friends DVD’s are presented in a familiar format; Four Episodes with a live action segment (Mr. Perkins) presented in-between the stories, with the additional bonus feature of a game or a Down at the Station Segment, but the presentation and quality of the two regions in which they are released are different…
HiT Entertainment usually release a CGI DVD in the US first, distributed by Lionsgate, the entire program (Stories and Perkins Segments) are edited together into one full DVD Movie, saving the Engine Roll Call song for the end and include the IOS intro in full CGI, Not yet transmitted for programs in the UK), the British releases are done by HiT Entertainment alone, and include the Mr Perkins segments, but the episode complete with titles, roll call song and credits, these being what’s now known as the Broadcast versions, In the end, the US Versions leave the song till the end, and is fully complete, no hanging round.

Ratio – 4:3 vs 16:9
One of the most important things about TV Programs and Movies nowadays is they use Widescreen, and we remember back in the old times we had small 4:3 Full screen TVs, now everything’s digital with High Definition and 16:9 Widescreen, this is something the current US DVD’s have yet to catch up on, asides the Thomas Movies (excluding Calling All Engines and The Great Discovery) they are still to this day presented in Fullscreen 4:3 – in those days widescreen films released on VHS were reformatted to full screen in order to fit on our screens, the UK’s Thomas DVD’s use Widescreen since the series moved to Widescreen from Series 6 in 2002, but Lionsgate continue to render the programs in Full screen rather than using Widescreen, yet they promote the DVD’s publicity images in 16:9 and, what has been recently found out, the Digital Download versions seen on Wal-Mart and YouTube, are formatted in 16:9.

Surely US audiences deserve better quality than that for DVD’s – HiT have recently released Best of James/Percy and all episodes are presented in both 4:3/16:9 – Isn’t it about time in terms of their DVD's that Lionsgate catched up?

Bonus Features
Bonus features are pretty slim for DVD’s made for kids, the UK’s bonus features usually are either an interactive puzzle or two, a karaoke song, or a Down at the Station segment, that are in my view, are enjoyable to watch, HiT have created various real interactive segments for their other programs, Bob the Builder on Site featuring actual Building Sites and construction at work, and the Angelina Ballerina series included the Little Stars Segments, of real dancers being taught different steps and music, and what better way for Thomas to be included than to have REAL steam engines at work? – It was a rare treat Thomas fans got to see real steam engines on VHS/DVD, not since the Christmas Song performance on The Biggest Ever Christmas Collection (1996).

Japan were usually up and about travelling around different Railways for their own Thomas DVD’s, The Down at the Station segments are brilliantly produced and filmed, so far ten or more have been made, and have often been shown on PBS, Nick Jr are really missing a treat here, the way their current 30min Thomas programs are produced and edited are rather poor, the US DVD releases don’t however include these, they include their own Games produced by Lionsgate as well as the regular karaoke song and puzzle segments, but the Down at the Station segments have to be praised for, they are educational, and is what Thomas and Friends was needing for DVD and TV.

Finally – Price and Quality
Are these DVD’s worth it the moment they come out? – No, a simple No, despite the quality they offer, four episodes just isn’t enough never mind the Mr Perkins segments and is simply not good value for money, it was in a time we remember HiT released either 6 or 9 episode DVD’s are the last I can remember being good value for money was the UK release – Heave Ho! – No segments, no songs, no bonus features, just 6 episodes from Start to Finish, however in these recent days HiT and Lionsgate do put together DVD’s that include 10 or more episodes, like the recent Complete 13th Series and the upcoming Engine Friends box set, the Thomas Films on the other hand go on longer than a regular DVD and is good value for money because it is a full 60min or longer film, Blu-Ray takes it a little far, but still is fair, I mean, you wouldn’t want to watch a Blu-Ray release of Splish, Splash Splosh or Up, Up and Away! Now would you? – But a Blu-ray of the entire first series…. – In our dreams unfortunately... :/

These are best waited until they reach a low price, either for Digital Download or DVD, some have recently hit £3 - £5, but for a four episode DVD at £14:99 in a place like an In store HMV going over HiT’s RRP?!? – I’d rather go for Series 13 at £12.99 or Best of James/Percy for £7 each! One thing HiT’s recent DVDs have lacked in full episode lists in terms of 20 episodes on one disc, I have plenty of other HiT Entertainment titles complete with booklets, - have they forgotten these can be used for episode listings as well as advertising products? – These days its BBFC first :P

The new Thomas DVD’s are fun, but then again, expensive, Parents and Families need to consider for what they are buying for their Children, where they buy it from and what’s on it, other than that they will receive good quality entertainment and enjoyable hours or peace and quiet, with a new look on the way for S17, Maybe it may not just improve the series, but improve the home entertainment it provides…
